LinkedIn Account Restricted? Why, How Long, What to Do
Paste the message LinkedIn showed you. See which restriction it is, how long LinkedIn says it lasts and what to do. Runs in your browser.
Paste the notice. See how long you wait.
LinkedIn does not use one single restriction. The words of the notice tell you which one you have, and that decides how long you wait and what you can do.
LinkedIn restriction message reader
Read in your browser. The reader does not send what you paste. This reads the words of the message only: LinkedIn alone knows the real reason.
How long each restriction lasts
What LinkedIn Help says about each one, read on November 4, 2026.
| Restriction | Words you may see | How long | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Automated activity | "software that automates activity" | Until the time in the notice. Repeats may lead to a permanent restriction. | Automated activity, Invitation restrictions |
| Invitations | "invitation limit", "too many invitations" | "Typically lasts one week". Up to one month for too many outstanding invitations. | Invitation limit reached, Invitation restrictions |
| Identity | "verify your identity" | No duration given. Until LinkedIn confirms you own the account. | Verify your identity |
| Possible takeover | "compromised" | No duration given. Until you verify your identity. | Account restrictions |
| Policy violation | "Professional Community Policies" | Temporary, indefinite or permanent, depending on the violation. | Account restrictions |
| Permanent | "permanently restricted" | No end date given. Other people cannot find your profile or message you. | Permanent restrictions |
One message is missing from LinkedIn Help: "accessed an unusually high volume of LinkedIn profile data". We have read it on customer accounts. It lasted about 24 hours in the few cases we reviewed, and longer after repeats. That is our observation, not a LinkedIn rule.
Why normal accounts get restricted
LinkedIn does not publish its thresholds. It does say what it does not allow: third-party software or browser extensions "that scrape, modify the appearance of, or automate activity on LinkedIn's website", and many invitations in a short time.
In our support cases, the pattern that comes back is a sudden change. On one sales team, the heaviest user looked at 392 profiles with no restriction. Others who had barely used LinkedIn got restricted after going through about 15 profiles in a row in one day. That is what we have seen, not a rule from LinkedIn, and it does not explain every case.
What to do once you are back
- Do not go back to full speed on the first day. Ramp up over the first week.
- Use LinkedIn normally for 5 to 7 days before you install a new tool, if you were not active before.
- Do not run several LinkedIn tools at the same time.
- Roll out a tool to a team in small batches, starting with the reps who already use LinkedIn every day.
- Keep invitations under what the invitation limit planner shows.
None of this guarantees an account stays clear. LinkedIn says repeated restrictions can become permanent, so treat a second one as a reason to stop and look at what is running.
Did a Chrome extension do this?
It can. LinkedIn's rules cover browser extensions that scrape, automate or change how LinkedIn looks, and LinkedIn does not say which tool or action led to a given restriction.
If you were restricted and use any extension on LinkedIn, follow LinkedIn's instruction first: disable it and wait for the time in the notice.
Locked out? Logged threads stay in your CRM.
Some restrictions lock you out of your whole account, inbox included. Conversations already logged to your CRM stay readable there, so a colleague can still see where a deal stands. Hublead logs the LinkedIn conversations you choose to HubSpot or Salesforce.
Wait until your account is back and you have had a normal week on LinkedIn. Then try Hublead for free: the free plan shows your CRM on LinkedIn, no card needed, and logging conversations starts with Professional.
Before you go further
Why is my LinkedIn account restricted?
LinkedIn lists a few causes: automated tools, many invitations in a short time, content or profile violations, identity problems, or signs that someone else took over the account. The words of your notice usually say which one. Paste them in the reader above.
How long does a LinkedIn restriction last?
It depends on the type. Automated activity: until the date and time in the notice. Invitations: typically one week, according to LinkedIn. Identity verification: until LinkedIn has confirmed you own the account. Some violations are permanent. We cannot promise a date for your account.
How do I unrestrict my LinkedIn account?
Log in and follow what LinkedIn asks on screen. For automated activity, LinkedIn asks you to disable the tool, then re-enables the account at the time in the notice. For identity, you verify through Persona with a government ID. For invitations, LinkedIn says it cannot remove or shorten the restriction, so you wait.
Can LinkedIn Support lift a restriction early?
For invitation restrictions, LinkedIn says no, and that Support cannot disclose the type or reason. For automated activity, LinkedIn offers a way to ask for a second look, currently available only to some members.
Why was I restricted when I did nothing unusual?
LinkedIn does not say what it measured. Browser extensions can act without you seeing it, and profile views you make by hand may count too. If you were not active on LinkedIn before and then got busy in a few days, that change alone may be what LinkedIn noticed. We cannot confirm the cause of one account from the outside.
